Preparing Your Quilt

How to Prepare Your Quilt For “Dancing With Francis”

Thank you for choosing Dancing With Francis to do your quilting! Francis is an Innova quilting machine and Brianne is the artist. They have been a team for the last five years and have no end in sight for their artistic ability.

Every quilt is different and unique. Each has its own dance to the stiches that are sewn into it. Please know that once you drop a quilt off, Brianne’s artistic thoughts may change to enhance your quilt. Many quilters trust Brianne and let her do her “magic”. If you have certain design elements that you wish to have in your quilt, please bring pictures with you at drop off. She will try her best to incorporate your wishes into your quilt.

Here are a few tips for preparing your quilt to bring to the studio.

Backing Fabric
In order for Brianne to mount a quilt to the leaders on Francis the backing of the quilt needs to be larger than the quilt top. If you choose to have an edge to edge design on your quilt then a backing 10” larger than the quilt top is plenty. Example:
                        Top: 60 x 60
                        Backing : 70 x 70
However, if you are choosing to have Brianne do custom quilting then it is nice to have the backing at least 15” larger than the quilt top. Example:
                        Top: 60 x 60
                        Backing: 75 x 75
The reason for the extra backing on a custom quilt is the need to use a ruler plate on the base of Francis. This allows Brianne to use rulers for her custom quilting. If the backing isn’t large enough then she cannot continue her beautiful quilting when she gets to the bottom of the quilt. We don’t want that!

Batting
Brianne carries Quilters Dream Batting. There is wool, cotton/poly blend, cotton and polyester batting available to you. She will cut your batting to size if you purchase it from her.

If you choose to bring your own batting please cut it 8” larger than the quilt top. Whether you choose to do custom or edge to edge, this is ample. Example:
                        Top: 60 x 60
                        Backing: 70 x 70 (edge to edge)
                        Batting: 68 x 68

Thread
Superior So Fine #50 is a favorite of Brianne’s and she has just about every color you could imagine. Finding the perfect blend for your quilt or that special pop of color will be a breeze!

Binding
Brianne will do binding for you if you so wish. Please do not cut the fabric into strips. Contact Brianne and she will calculate the yardage needed for your quilt. Brianne prefers to machine stitch the binding to the front and then hand stitch it to the back.

Labels
Do you need a label for your quilt? Brianne can do that too!

Pricing**
Quilts take time, money, patience and a lot of love. They are meant to last a lifetime and to spread joy. Brianne’s quilting reflects this. The prices below are starting points for her work. There is a minimum of $100.

Edge to Edge Quilting….. $.03 per square inch
Custom Quilting…………...$.06 per square inch
Thread…………………………$2 per bobbin
Binding……………………......$4 per running foot

Example: Quilt: 60 x 60
                  E2E Quilting…. 60 x 60 = 3600 square inches. 3600 x .03 = $108
                  Custom Quilting… 60 x 60 = 3600 square inches. 3600 x .06 = $216

Please note that this is just the quilting cost. Thread, batting if you choose to purchase it from Brianne, and taxes are not included in this pricing.
** Custom quilting can require many more hours of work than an edge to edge. Brianne does not charge by the hour but if there is a unique request then pricing for your quilt will reflect your request.
