Christmas in June

Good Morning!

Today is a lovely day to share another fabulous quilt that Peggy so graciously let me do for her. Peggy had seen one of my quilts hanging in our local quilt shop, Sleepy Valley Quilt Co., and had asked if I had quilted it. Thank goodness I had cards at the shop so she could call me! It amazed me that she could know me by my work. Just goes to show that practice, patience, and continuing to challenge yourself with design and technique proves that you can create your own style of quilting and be recognized for it!

Peggy had previously drawn designs that she thought would compliment the quilt on paper. She brought me this paper and I simply took what she liked and put my style into it. I had previously watched a DVD of Judi Madsen's called "Fabulous Background Quilting". I took one of her ideas for applique, which is to echo around it a few times. Although these trees are pieced, I used the idea and echoed around them once.

From this picture you can see the swirly shapes I gave the background. Because the quilt was more concentrated in straight lines, adding a softer background fill was a wise choice. I used Superior So Fine #50 thread for both the top and back.

In #3 picture you can see the echoing, the background fill, and the small border design. I thought of garland at Christmas time and wanted to incorporate that into this quilt, creating this inside border. I used Cindy's Circles to create the swooping, half circle, garland like design. The rest is free motion pebbling and leafy/feathers for the inside fill.

The outside border, pictured here in #4, I chose to do simple straight line quilting. I don't always do straight lines in borders, but this quilt told me that straight lines were just fine. i did try and alternate the sizes of the lines, going from 1" to 1/2". Just gives it a little extra detail.

Silly me didn't take a picture of the entire quilt once it was completed. I think you have an idea of what the quilt looks like now and how I went about the quilting design process.

If you were presented with this quilt, how would you quilt it?

P.S I think I forget how much fun the outside world can be. During Memorial Day weekend I suggested to the family we go to the lake. We had so much fun! We packed a picnic, chairs, a quilt of course, toys for the kids. We took a day to enjoy each other and the beauty that God has created around us. Here is a picture I want to share with you:

So get outside this summer too! Enjoy the beauty around you and the people who you can share it with.

Happy Quilting!
